One man in custody after lengthy police negotiation in Hythe

One man is in custody after a domestic incident at a residence in Hythe that began Tuesday evening led to a lengthy negotiation between the suspect and police.

The situation began unfolding at a residence near the Hythe Regional School at around 8:19 p.m. on August 11, as police responded to a call of an adult man threatening people and was believed to be in possession of a firearm. Beaverlodge RCMP were able to bring all those being threatened to a safe location while the man was contained to inside the residence.

Authorities say the suspect then began threatening RCMP Officers, leading to an Emergency Response Team (ERT) being called in to help with the situation. ERT arrived at around 2 a.m. and negotiated with the man for nearly four hours before he was taken into custody shortly before 6 a.m.

Charges are now pending against the 57-year-old man and police say they are continuing to investigate the situation, adding that it is an isolated incident and no further details will be released.
