Rycroft’s Max Sekulic defended his Alberta Match Play title at the Jagare Ridge Golf Club in Edmonton this past weekend.

Sekulic entered the tournament as the number five seed and cruised through the Round of 16 and the Quarter Finals.

In the Semi-Finals, Sekulic matched up against U19 Champion and number one seeded Hunter Thomson. He ended up taking the match 3 and 2 and advanced to the Sunday final against Tommy McKenzie from Calgary.

During Sunday’s final, Sekulic got off to a hot start against McKenzie, who was the 10 seed in the tournament.

He birdied the first two holes and had a four-stroke lead after the front nine.

Sekulic continued his solid play and continued to hold his four-stroke lead throughout most of the back nine, but McKenzie found his game late on the back nine and would go on to birdie 14, 15 and 17 drawing within one shot of Sekulic heading into the 18th hole.

On 18, McKenzie would hook his tee shot to the far right, and then have to wait for a lightning delay before being able to resume play. .

McKenzie would double boggy the 18th and Sekulic would par the final hole and end up winning the tourney.

Sekulic never trailed at any point in the tournament. He spoke to Alberta Golf after his victory.

“It feels great, to be honest. I was just stoked to be able to play competition this year. I got off to a really hot start and started faltering and wasn’t very disciplined out there and I kept making some pretty bad errors. I just held it off, didn’t panic and I was just slow and steady event when the train was coming off the tracks a bit, I just found a way to steer it back on.”
