A big weekend of horse racing is coming up at Evergreen Park.

The Grande Prairie Derby will be the eighth of nine races to be run on Sunday. Five thoroughbreds will run a mile for a purse of $13,750. Local trainers Kathy McNally and Clinton Rycroft will each have a hose in the race.

Free Thought, owned by Stojan Quarter Horses, will try to extend his North American winning streak to 18 in the first of six races to be held Saturday. He will be in a field of five in the 770-yard Evergreen Park Distance Final.

The second of four Regional Challenge races to be held at Evergreen Park this year will also be run on Saturday. The 440-yard Challenge Final will carry a purse of $45,254. The winning horse will also get a chance to run in the North American final October 24 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
