UPDATE: 10-year-old girl killed in Highway 16 crash near Jasper

Aug 18, 2020 | 12:19 PM

UPDATE: Hinton RCMP say a 10-year-old girl has died following a collision between an SUV and a pickup about 10 km east of the Jasper National Park Gates along Highway 16.

The girl was one of seven occupants of the SUV, all from Edmonton. The other six occupants, ages 13, 14, 16, 19, 44 and 56 suffered injuries that are not believed to be life threatening and have been taken to hospital.

The preliminary investigation by the RCMP Collision Analyst suggests the pick-up truck was travelling westbound on the Yellowhead Highway, when it crossed the centre line and struck the eastbound SUV.

The 36-year-old male driver, from BC, suffered minor injuries.

Hinton RCMP, along with the collision analyst, remain on scene with emergency crews and are expected to be there for several more hours. Significant delays are expected due to large backlogs of traffic.

Jasper RCMP are investigating a fatal multi-vehicle collision on Highway 16, 10 km east of the Jasper National Park gates.

Three vehicles were involved in the crash, and RCMP have confirmed one fatality as a result of the collision.

Both the east and westbound lanes of Highway 16 are closed to traffic and it is unknown when it’ll re-open to the public.

Traffic heading towards Jasper National Park is currently being re-routed in a different direction.
