City seeking info on potential upgrades to part of 92 Street

A City of Grande Prairie committee has requested administration to report back on potential upgrades that could be made to 92 Street between 68 and 84 Avenue.

Councillor Chris Thiessen initiated the discussion at Tuesday’s Infrastructure and Economic Development Committee meeting, saying he has heard from many residents about safety concerns regarding that stretch of road during his two terms on council.

“I hear a lot about the shoulders of the road being a bit narrow. Sometimes the lighting on the stretch between 76 and 84 [Avenue], it gets pretty dark on some nights, and then it’s hard to see a lot of cars passing by on that road with their [high beams] on,” said Thiessen. “As winter comes, it becomes even more of a safety concern.”

The discussion came about as the committee moved to have the 2020 Transportation Master Plan brought before Council for approval. A second motion was then made to have the report on 92 Street brought back to committee, as some council members were hoping to have some of the safety and capacity concerns addressed separately.

Thiessen says that’s because he views 92 Street as an important artery for the City’s east side.

“We have corridors, major city thoroughfares, double-laned, running through the west, the north and to the south of Grande Prairie. There is nothing really in the east,” said Thiessen. “I think City Council and members of the public look forward to having these types of discussions.”

The report on potential upgrades, and timelines for those potential upgrades, will be brought back to the Infrastructure and Economic Development committee at a later date.
