ECONOMIC STIMULUS GRANTS

Application process opens Monday for economic stimulus-related grants

Aug 23, 2020 | 8:20 AM

Applications will be accepted as of Monday for a pair of city grants aimed at supporting local businesses and stimulating the local economy in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

City Economic Development Manager Rebecca Leigh says the Beautification and Patio grant will see the city match 50 percent of project costs, up to a maximum of fifteen thousand dollars.

“And that can be applied to any facade improvements, landscaping, or patio projects that a business or building owner is undertaking on their commercial property. Some of the reasons we wanted to roll this out is to support businesses in invesiing in their buildings and properties, creating employment opportunities, and also wanting to ensure there was some support there for the creation of new patio spaces.”

Leigh adds patios in general are great opportunities to connect to pedestrians, as well as to generate an indoor/outdoor living opportunity.

A total of 450 thousand dollars are available through that grant.

Another 50 thousand is available in the local marketing grant, which Leigh states has a couple of different options to it.

“The grant can match up to 50 percent of project costs, to a maximum of 25-hundred dollars, for the creation of a marketing plan or marketing content. We also have a second opportunity in there which includes a grant equal to 75 percent of project costs, to a maximum of 75 hundred dollars, where a collaborative marketing project involves three or more businesses.”

Leigh says the intent of the second option is to encourage businesses to work together to develop unique initiatives.

She adds the marketing grants are open to a variety of local businesses, ranging from retail businesses to professional services.

Applications will be reviewed on a first come, first serve basis, and will stay open until all of the funding has been allocated.
