Second COVID-19 related fatality reported in City of Grande Prairie over weekend

There was one more death related to COVID-19 in the City of Grande Prairie over the weekend, while there were also four new cases identified in the Swan City between Friday and Sunday.

Alberta Health tells EverythingGP that the death in Grande Prairie was a man in his 70’s and is linked to a residence operated by Signature Support Services. So far, there are 10 active cases at the home and 11 total.

The fatality becomes the second death linked to COVID-19 in the City, with the first being reported on August 20.

There were also five new cases identified in the County of Grande Prairie over the weekend, as the province added 258 (83 on August 21, 106 on August 22 and 69 on August 23) new cases. There are now 1,172 active cases in the province, while 11,600 people have recovered.

A total of 234 deaths have been linked to COVID-19 in Alberta, increase of four over the weekend.

Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of the end of day August 23 are as follows.

  • City of Grande Prairie: 71 cases (26 active, 43 recovered, two deaths)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 43 cases (15 active, 28 recovered)
  • M.D. of Greenview: Nine cases (One active, seven recovered, one death)
  • Birch Hills County: Three cases (One active, two recovered)
  • M.D. of Spirit River: Three cases (All recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 73 cases (63 recovered, ten deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 47 cases (42 recovered, five deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: Five cases (All recovered)
  • M.D. of Peace: 12 cases (Five active, seven recovered)
  • M.D. of Fairview: Two Cases (Both recovered)
  • Clear Hills County: 29 cases (Five active, 24 recovered)
  • Northern Sunrise County: Six cases (Two active, four recovered)
  • County of Northern Lights: 16 cases (Nine active, seven recovered)
  • Mackenzie County: 257 cases (52 active, 197 recovered, eight deaths)

Since Friday, hospitalizations in the province grew by two from 43 to 45, while intensive care admissions remained at nine. In the North Zone, eight people are in hospital with one of those individuals in ICU.

Over the weekend, Alberta Health conducted 28,760 tests. In total, 894,611 tests have been completed on 717,514 Albertans. In the North Zone, 61,166 people have been tested.
