County Agricultural Services Board to grow with addition of three public members

Aug 26, 2020 | 12:11 PM

Members of the public will soon be allowed to serve on the County of Grande Prairie’s Agricultural Services Board.

Previously, only members of County council and the Agricultural Fieldman were allowed to sit on the board.

But an update to the ASB By-Law that was approved by council on Monday now allows for the addition of three public members.

County of Grande Prairie Reeve Leanne Beaupre says they recognize that engagement with the public is key in making sure directives of the Agricultural Services Board are met.

“In the past, what has happened is that we have advertised for members, and we were not able to find any. But since then, we have actually been approached by the general public, the agricultural community, asking us to consider that.”

Beaupre adds the Agricultural Safety Board oversees a number of areas.

“There is a responsibility to enforce the Weed act, as outlined in the Municipal Government Act, pursuing those noxious and prohibited weeds in the area.

“Education is also a large component of what the Agricultural department does. We also do quite a bit of spraying and mowing as well.”

The positions will be advertised, with applications to be presented at the County’s Organizational Meeting in October.
