EXPRESSION OF INTEREST

Expression of Interest process opened for Resources Road piece of land

Grande Prairie City Council has approved moving ahead with an Expression of Interest (EOI) process, to explore the possible sale of a parcel of land along Resources Road.

The land is located between the Recycle Plus II Bottle Depot and 68 Avenue.

Mayor Bill Given says the EOI process gives them more of an ability to weigh the variety of interests that the public might have in that piece of land.

“A part of the public interest would be how much we can sell it for so that money can come to the municipality to (help) reduce property taxes. Another part of a value to the public might be the fact that it is appears to be a relatively untouched green space, which I know there are people in Grande Prairie who enjoy those kind of places.”

“Another part of the value that it provides to the public might be in the water management that it provides through the wetland area that is there.”

Given adds no determination has been made as to if they will actually sell that land, saying there is a wide range of opinions on the matter among members of council.

“There are some council members who are ready to sell that land through a more typical “stick up a for sale sign” and see what price comes in process. And there are other council members that are not prepared to sell that land at all.”

“I think an Expression of Interest process allows us to kind of get the best of both worlds.”

Given adds he is curious to see whether or not there is anything in the private sector that would provide enough value to convince council to consider selling that piece of land.
