ENTWISTLE, Alta. – RCMP say a man is dead following a police pursuit and a shooting with officers west of Edmonton.

Mounties say they received a notice Sunday afternoon to be on the lookout for a person wanted for an aggravated assault in Onion Lake, Sask., who was also believed to be in possession of a firearm.

Cpl. Deanna Fontaine says cellphone information indicated the suspect was west of Edmonton and a vehicle was located in the area about 8:30 p.m.

The vehicle fled a traffic stop and, after a chase, a tire deflation device was used and the vehicle was stopped at Highway 16 near the hamlet of Entwistle.

Fontaine says there was an altercation between officers and a man in the vehicle, officers fired their guns and the man died at the scene.

None of the officers involved were injured and the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating.
