No team sports, practices at Grande Prairie-area schools in September

Aug 31, 2020 | 5:19 PM

All three school divisions in the Grande Prairie area have come to the joint decision to postpone all team sports and practices for the month of September.

The Peace Wapiti Public School Division, Grande Prairie Public School Division and Grande Prairie and District Catholic Schools issued a joint statement on Monday, saying they made a decision to align with the Alberta Schools Athletic Association.

The ASAA announced on August 13 that all of the organization’s fall championships would be delayed until the Alberta Government moves into stage three of it’s relaunch. That includes the sports of football, volleyball, golf and cross country running.

It also added that ASAA member schools, only if permitted by their school jurisdiction, will be able to run in-school practices that comply with Government of Alberta’s cohort restrictions.

The decision by the tri-board says that it supports the idea of maintaining classroom cohorts and reducing interaction with students from other classes.

The board will update the ongoing situation at the end of September when they have a clearer picture of what school and what the future of sports in school looks like.
