Mobile mammography unit heading to Fairview later this month

Alberta Health Services’ mobile mammography unit will be parked in Fairview at the end of September, as part of AHS’ Screen Test program.

The unit will be located at the Fairview Health Complex (10628 110 Street) on September 24, 25, 26, 28, 29, 30 and October 1-3, providing breast cancer screening tests for women ages 50-74, the age group which is most at-risk of developing breast cancer.

“A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast and has proven to be the most effective way to detect breast cancer,” reads a release from AHS. “Early detection allows for a greater number of options for treatment and a better chance of survival.”

AHS is also inviting residents of Worsley to the Fairview clinic this year, due to the delay in scheduling for the mobile unit caused by COVID-19.

Anyone wishing to get screened can book an appointment by calling 1-800-667-0604.

According to AHS’ updated 2020 schedule for its mobile mammography unit, it will be in the following Peace Country locations later this year:

  • Spirit River – October 5-10
  • Manning – October 13-15
  • Paddle Prairie Metis Settlement – October 16
  • Hythe – October 19-21
  • McLennan – October 22-24
  • High Prairie: October 31- November 7

AHS says the aim of the mobile screening program is to improve access to cancer screening for women in northern Alberta communities where mammography is not readily available.
