City of Grande Prairie to get one final blast of summer weather

Sep 8, 2020 | 3:08 PM

The City of Grande Prairie and most of northwestern Alberta will experience above seasonal temperatures this week, before heading back down to more seasonal temperatures over the weekend.

Throughout the week, temperatures in the City of Grande Prairie, as well as the surrounding Peace Region, are expected to hover around 22 degrees. The forecasted high for Thursday is 25 degrees.

The average temperature for Grande Prairie for the month of September is around 17 degrees.

Dan Kulak, a meteorologist with Enviroment and Climate Change Canada, says the weather is expected to cool down to more seasonal temperatures over the weekend, and as October approaches it’ll be less likely that there will be warmer temperatures.

“Technically we (are in) fall as of September first and that’s something many people don’t realize, they think the season doesn’t until change the equinox on the 22nd of the month, but meteorologists think of fall as beginning on the first of September.”

“It’s not to say that you can’t have another blast of warm air and the classic, typical fall day where you wish it would never end, we can get plus 20 temperatures in October, but they become much more unusual as we get later into the season.”

With cooler weather coming, Kulak says that it is important to look ahead at what weather could come next.

“Now that we are in fall, talking about some warm weather here, we (might want to think about) winter. As we move into the month of October and late September, those chances for early season snow falls do increase significantly. Even though it’s going to be warm this week, do be thinking in a few weeks that you might be hearing forecasts with snow in them.”
