RCMP reminding parents to teach their kids about stranger danger

Sep 17, 2020 | 4:07 PM

Grande Prairie RCMP are asking parents to talk to their kids about stranger danger.

Corporal Candace Hrdlicka says this comes after some social media posts were brought to the attention of the police.

“In general, we have received some reports. We were made aware of some Facebook posts regarding suspicious activity, suggesting that there might have been someone approaching children both in Grande Prairie and out in Sexsmith.”

Corporal Hrdlicka says she does not have a description of a suspect or any vehicle they may have been driving.

She adds this is a reminder of the importance of talking to kids about staying safe.

“To tell the children not to go anywhere with anyone without first getting permission from a parent or a guardian. It’s always good to have a buddy with you no matter your age, so even for young children right to adults, we’re always safer when we have somebody with us. It’s a good idea to practice scenarios with children, ask them what they would do in certain different situations so that they feel better prepared if somebody does approach them or if there is a situation that makes them uncomfortable.”

Corporal Hrdlicka says it is also important to teach older kids how to be safe when they are home alone.

“Whether they should be answering the door. (Also), opening the door to strangers, we encourage them not to do that; how to answer the telephone if their parents are not home (and) what to do if they’re feeling uncomfortable or scared, just to prepare them for different situations that might come up.”

RCMP say anyone who sees suspicious activity can call the Grande Prairie detachment at 780-830-5701, their local detachment, or they can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), online at www.P3Tips.com or by using the “P3 Tips” app available through the Apple App or Google Play Store.
