COVID-19 Update: Total active cases down, first death from the disease in the MD of Lesser Slave River

The number of active cases of COVID-19 in Alberta has dropped again.

It is now at 1,424, compared to the 1,483 reported in Thursday’s update. The province says 14,702 people have now recovered.

Out of the 11,313 tests completed on Thursday, 107 new cases of COVID-19 were found.

The number of active cases in the North Zone is up by four to 197. Another 1,075 people have recovered.

The death toll is up by one to 255 after one person in the MD of Lesser Slave River died.

That is the first death from COVID-19 in that area. There have now been 34 deaths in the North Zone.

Hospitalizations in Alberta have gone up for the second straight day. The total is now at 44 with seven people in an intensive care unit.

The number of people in an ICU has dropped by one from Thursday. There are now seven people in the hospital in the North Zone with COVID-19, none are in intensive care.

Active cases in the County of Grande Prairie is up to six from the three reported Thursday.

The MD of Greenview also saw its number grow by two and is now at three active.

The City of Grande Prairie saw one recovery and no new cases, it’s now at nine active.

The numbers for the Peace Country through September 17 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 97 cases (9 actives, 86 recovered, two deaths)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 52 cases (six actives, 46 recovered)
  • M.D. of Greenview: 15 cases (three actives, 11 recovered, one death)
  • Birch Hills County: Three cases (All recovered)
  • M.D. of Spirit River: 11 cases (two actives, nine recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 74 cases (zero actives, 64 recovered, ten deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 48 cases (zero actives, 43 recovered, five deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: 14 cases (three actives, 10 recovered, one death)
  • M.D. of Peace: 25 cases (six actives, 19 recovered)
  • M.D. of Fairview: 16 cases (zero actives, 16 recovered)
  • Clear Hills County: 87 cases (nine actives, 77 recovered, one death)
  • Northern Sunrise County: Nine cases (three actives, six recovered)
  • County of Northern Lights: 53 cases (25 actives, 28 recovered)
  • Saddle Hills County: One case (One active, 0 recovered)
  • Mackenzie County: 387 cases (50 actives, 325 recovered, 12 deaths)

Alberta’s chief medical officer of health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw says Edmonton’s Waverley School appears to have the first case of COVID-19 being passed from one person to another within the school.

Dr. Hinshaw adds the disease being passed from person to another within a school was expected to happen sooner or later.

There are now 78 confirmed COVID-19 cases at 57 Alberta schools.
