Grande Prairie RCMP warn of “highly concerning” substance found in seized drugs

Sep 22, 2020 | 11:49 AM

The Grande Prairie RCMP have issued an alert for a new substance recently found in street drugs seized in the Swan City, which they say is known to be associated with overdoses and deaths.

In July, police in Grande Prairie conducted an investigation following a traffic stop, where they seized what they believed to be fentanyl. The suspected fentanyl was sent to Health Canada for analysis, which indicated the substance did contain fentanyl, as well as MDMA, cocaine, methamphetamine, caffeine and what is known as 2-Fluorodeschloroketamine.

RCMP say the presence of 2-Fluorodeschloroketamine is “highly concerning”, and that the information on the safety of this substance, which is a stronger form of ketamine, is quite limited. With that, the RCMP is warning all drug users to be aware of this substance, as they might not know it has been cut into the drugs they are taking.

“Drug use can be highly addictive and can often lead to harmful side effects including overdose and death,” reads a statement from the Grande Prairie RCMP. “There is an increased risk when different drugs are combined with each other or with alcohol, and when the user is unaware of the content of the drugs they are consuming.”

Police are asking the public to be aware of any signs of someone who may be experiencing an overdose, and to call 9-1-1 immediately and provide whatever assistance possible, such as administering naloxone.

Police say signs of a drug overdose include:

  • Difficulty walking, talking, staying awake
  • Blue lips or nails
  • Small pupils
  • Cold/clammy skin
  • Dizziness and confusion
  • Choking, gurgling or snoring sounds
  • Slow, weak or no breathing
  • Inability to wake up

Authorities ask of anyone to report all drug related activities to the RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
