Forty-month sentence given after what police described as a crime spree

Alberta Justice says a 40-month jail term has been given to the man charged after what RCMP described at the time as a two-day crime spree in the City and County of Grande Prairie.

Robert Wade Stewart was sentenced during a September 15 appearance in Grande Prairie court. He had earlier pleaded guilty to charges of assaulting a peace officer, possession of stolen property over $5000, and operation of a vehicle while prohibited. A dozen other charges were withdrawn.

Stewart will be given 13 months credit for time spent in custody before he was sentenced.

RCMP said at the time they were called to a home in the Hillside area May 31, 2019, and found Stewart loading items onto a stolen cargo trailer. He fled in a stolen pickup.

That truck was later found abandoned in Clairmont, where a second truck had also been stolen. That vehicle was later located east of Grade Prairie, pulling a stolen travel trailer. The truck fled from police, striking another vehicle, and causing minor damage while fleeing.

RCMP said on June 1, 2019, Stewart struck three police vehicles with the stolen truck when Mounties came to arrest him. He was later located at a Grande Prairie home and arrested without incident.
