Second degree murder charge laid in Paddle Prairie suspicious death
Alberta RCMP’s Major Crimes unit is investigating a suspicious death of a 28-year-old man from Paddle Prairie that occurred on Monday evening, while they have charged a suspect with second degree murder in the case.
High Level RCMP were called to a disturbance at a residence in Paddle Prairie Metis Settlement on September 21 at around 7:30 p.m., and were contacted via 911 again five minutes later of a reported firearms incident at that same residence.
Upon arrival, police found the victim, Brett Daniel Sowan, who had suffered a firearms-related injury and was pronounced dead at the scene.
On that same day, RCMP arrested and charged 26-year-old Paddle Prairie resident Randall James Cardinal with second degree murder in the case. Cardinal remains in custody and is to appear in High Level Provincial Court on September 28.
