MD of Greenview farmers making progress with harvest

Sep 30, 2020 | 12:00 PM

The Reeve of the MD of Greenview estimates about half of the crop has been combined in his municipality.

Dale Smith says it could be closer to 75 per cent at some farms.

He adds there has been “a full range” of yields this year.

“Very poor to above average. My estimation would be probably a little bit below average yield. It’s just that there is such a variation in the crops in every field.”

Smith says it is hard to give a definitive answer until harvest is done.

He adds crop quality has been variable.

“The wheat crops are way better than the canola and peas. We grow a lot of forage seed in the MD too and those farmers that grew forage, timothy and fescue particularly, had some outstanding crops this year, mainly because of the moisture.

“Our other producers with hay crops, again, outstanding yields.”

Smith says farmers are optimistic harvest will be finished this fall.

“I think farmers are always optimistic. If we can just have two weeks of fairly good weather, there will be guys wrapping up their harvesting. With how dry it is right now, we would have to have a lot of moisture to delay them.”

Smith says he does not see anybody not getting done this year.
