A man from Red Deer faces traffic violation charges and a man from Whitecourt was arrested, following a traffic stop on Wednesday, September 23.

Whitecourt RCMP stopped the vehicle as the driver was not wearing a seat belt, and further investigation revealed that the vehicle was unregistered, uninsured, and mis-using an Alberta Licence Plate.

The 40-year old driver from Red Deer was issued traffic tickets under the Traffic Safety Act for:

  • Uninsured motor vehicle
  • Unregistered motor vehicle
  • Mis-use of licence plate
  • Driver failing to wear a seat belt

The driver will appear in Provincial Court in Whitecourt to address the violations.

In a release, the RCMP say this investigation involved a passenger allegedly providing the officer with multiple false names. The vehicle was searched and a quantity of suspected methamphetamine was discovered and seized.

Further investigation led to the discovery of the man’s identity, Matthew Phillip Levesque, of Whitecourt. The 35-year old man was wanted on outstanding warrants related to 44 various charges, including breach of multiple release orders including 24-hour house arrest.

Levesque has since been charged with:

  • Obstructing a peace officer
  • Identity fraud
  • Possession of methamphetamine
  • Three counts of failure to comply with release order
  • Passenger failing to wear seat belt

Following a judicial hearing, Levesque was held for a bail hearing, and will be held for court in multiple jurisdictions related to the outstanding warrants.
