Cars for Christmas lottery officially kicks off

Oct 1, 2020 | 10:26 AM

The annual Cars for Christmas Mega Lottery is back in Grande Prairie.

It is sponsored by the Swan City Rotary Club and is meant to give ticket buyers some extra holiday cheer, while also helping out those less fortunate throughout the Peace Region.

Dave Cook, the Chair of the Swan City Lottery Committee, says there is a lot for people to look forward to.

“There are lots of changes in terms of the lottery structure, the number of partners and some of the ideas that we have in terms of attracting a lot of interest in this year’s lottery.”

“There is about $415,000 worth of prizes and the top prize is a 2021 (GMC Yukon Denali) with $10,000 in cash on top of that. The second prize is a 2021 one-ton diesel truck. We also are bringing back our 50/50 and 12 days of Christmas as well.”

Cook mentioned that ATVs, other vehicles and prizes will also be available.

While there is lots of buzz around the lottery this year, Cook says its been a priority of the Swan City Lottery Committee to make sure they are helping out the community during these trying times.

“We’ve doubled the number of partners because of the pandemic this year. We’ve gone from about six partner groups to 13 this year. On top of that is also six regional food banks in terms of the recipients of the dollars. Last year we gave back to 50 different community partners in the Grande Prairie area. (It is) a huge local benefit and we stepped it up this year to help even be more.”

Cook says that the committee chose to focus on three themes when it comes to helping out their partners and charities.

From October to November, the lottery will focus on organizations in charge of food security like food banks. In November, they’ll focus their attention on mental health organizations and in December, they’ll turn their attention to helping youth organizations in the region.

Cook is hoping that they could raise $75,000 for local food banks in October.

You can purchase tickets online or in-person for the lottery. Cook tells EverythingGP that their in-person ticket location will be inside the Prairie Mall at the same place as it was last year. However, the in-person ticket sales won’t begin until October 28.

Canadian Tire will also have some sales for the lottery as well on select weekends.

“This is a great opportunity to win a prize, but also support your community. These organizations are really in need of our support right now and a lot of people are in need of their support right now too.”
