Seven new COVID-19 cases in City of Grande Prairie for second straight day

Alberta Health reported 277 new cases of COVID-19 for Thursday, while cases continued to climb in the City of Grande Prairie.

The province identified seven new cases in the City for October 8, while there were also three recoveries. The active case total in the Swan City sits at 29 heading into the long weekend, with 98 recoveries and two deaths.

Elsewhere in the Grande Prairie area, there was one more case reported in the County of Grande Prairie, where there are now six active cases. The lone active case in the MD of Greenview also recovered on Thursday, leaving no active cases there.

Two new cases were also identified in the Birch Hills County area.

Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of the end of day October 8 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 129 cases (29 active, 98 recovered, two deaths)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 66 cases (six active, 60 recovered)
  • M.D. of Greenview: 16 cases (15 recovered, one death)
  • Birch Hills County: Five cases (two active, three recovered)
  • M.D. of Spirit River: 11 cases (all recovered)
  • Saddle Hills County: Two cases (one active, one recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 74 cases (one active, 63 recovered, ten deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 48 cases (43 recovered, five deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: 18 cases (one active, 16 recovered, one death)
  • M.D. of Peace: 27 cases (two active, 25 recovered)
  • M.D. of Fairview: 16 cases (all recovered)
  • Clear Hills County: 91 cases (four active, 86 recovered, one death)
  • Northern Sunrise County: Nine cases (all recovered)
  • County of Northern Lights: 56 cases (one active, 55 recovered)
  • Mackenzie County: 414 cases (9 active, 392 recovered, 13 deaths)

Active cases in the province now sit at 2,225, while 17,488 cases are considered recovered. One fatality was removed from those linked to COVID-19 in the province on Friday, dropping the death toll to 282.

Hospitalizations continued to climb in the Edmonton and Calgary Zones, where 74 of the 86 total hospital admissions are in the province. Of those 86 people in hospital, 11 are in intensive care (10 of whom are in Edmonton or Calgary).

In the North Zone, there are six people hospitalized with COVID-19, with no one in an ICU.

Thursday’s new cases come after the province ran over 25,000 tests at the provincial lab. A total of 108,689 people from northern Alberta have been tested since March, an increase of 863 on Thursday.
