Wapiti clean-up set for Saturday

Oct 14, 2020 | 6:30 AM

An expanded version of the annual Wapiti clean-up is set for Saturday.

It is organized by the Wapiti Off-Road Association.

President Cory McInnis says they’ve expanded because last year, the Wapiti Dunes area was fairly clean.

“Last year, we found you had to go a long way to fill a garbage bag is the best way that somebody put it. It wasn’t actually too bad in the Dunes. There was a lot of other groups that were taking care of things on their own, outside of the time of the clean-up. We found things were in pretty good shape, so we actually took it across the river to the other side.”

He adds they found some areas that needed to be looked after.

“It has never had a proper clean-up done over on the other side, through the Canfor Road and some of the tributary roads, so there were dumping sites that have not touched in 10, 20, 30 years. I’m sure we’ll still have a need for that come through once I do (some investigating) on the other side of the river.”

McInnis says his group has a usage agreement with Canfor for its bridge. Aquatera will allow free dumping and the RCMP will be there to investigate any abandoned vehicles. He adds they could use a loader or two. There is also room for more volunteers.

“The more, the merrier. We can handle anybody that comes and send them in different directions. They can take their pick-up trucks and their side-by-sides or dump trailers and we can get it all arranged. They just have to show up and sign in for a safety meeting and we’ll get them pointed in the right direction.”

The sign-in and safety meeting starts at 10 am at the Wapiti Dunes staging area. McInnis says the clean-up will go ahead, rain or shine

Anyone who knows of dumping sites on public land in that area can contact the Wapiti Off-Road Association through its Facebook page.
