Sub-zero weather expected for Peace Region this weekend

Oct 16, 2020 | 5:00 AM

Residents in the Peace Region will have to deal with some winter weather this weekend.

On Thursday, Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning for the Grande Prairie-Beaverlodge-Valleyview forecast area.

Environment Canada says that between 10 and 15 centimeters of snow is expected in the Peace Region by Friday afternoon.

Meteorologist Eric Dykes says that Grande Prairie should brace for some winter-like temperatures over the weekend as well.

“In the Peace Region, we aren’t expecting quite as much snow as we are expecting further south and in the foothills. That snow that (began Thursday night) is going to continue through Friday morning and end by the afternoon.”

“At that point and time, we are going to see the winds pick up at the northeast, gusting up to 40 kilometers per hour and we are only going to get to a high of minus one, which is quite a bit cooler than we normally expect for this time of the year.”

Over the weekend, temperatures will remain cold, with temperatures dipping down to minus 12 and potentially even colder at night. Dykes says that while it will get cold at night, he doesn’t think that we’ll see any record-breaking temperatures.

“Considering the temperatures that we are seeing over the next two nights of lows of minus 11, it doesn’t look like it’s quite enough to break any records, but still, mighty cold for this time of the year.”

With snow falling throughout the Peace Region, Dykes tells EverythingGP that now is a good time to get your vehicle ready for winter and to adjust to winter driving conditions.

“Make sure to maintain a distance between you and the next driver in front of you. It’s always a good time to throw in that emergency kit as well for the winter. You might as well do it now since the snow is starting to fly already.”

Temperatures are expected to warm back up on October 19. Environment Canada is expecting a high of plus two degrees.
