Grande Prairie Curling Centre to start season November 16

The Grande Prairie Curling Centre will be going ahead with a 2020-21 season.

The club says in a release that the season will begin on November 16, after they were able to have enough teams register for the season.

The club says that around 70 teams have registered to this point across their regular leagues. Though they had originally been in need of at least 90 teams to go forward, Serge Martin with the GPCC says they will be able to put a season together.

“We have engaged Colin J Griffith & Assoc., who undertook a thorough review and analysis of the financial impacts of operating our facility in this new environment, which was very helpful in reaching our decision to commit to operating our facility for this season,” said Martin.

“He will be continuing for a period of time as our Interim Executive Director to assist in the necessary preparations for the upcoming season.”

Griffith says he is looking forward to getting the season going, adding many of the club’s other amenities will also be operational.

“Our full-service Lounge will be in operation and we welcome our business organizations and social groups to book our excellent facilities for social events, Christmas parties, special occasions, corporate bonspiels as well as meetings and conferences.”

The club says the City of Grande Prairie is nearing completion of the installation of the new ice plant, which the club says will be commissioned in early November.

“The City of Grande Prairie needs to be recognized and credited for the major investments and their operational support to the Curling Centre over the past decade,” added Griffith. “It has been exemplary and is well appreciated by the community at large, as well as our curling community.”
