Labour Force Survey

Grande Prairie CoC urges participation in final days of Labour Needs survey

Oct 30, 2020 | 1:07 PM

The Grande Prairie and District Chamber of Commerce’s Labour Needs Assessment survey is coming to a close this weekend, and the public is being encouraged to participate in order to create informative, robust data on the local labour force.

The Chamber launched the two Labour Needs surveys in September, one for employees and job seekers, and one for employers, in an effort to gain more insight into the current labour force’s weaknesses and strengths, and any gaps or opportunities that may need addressing.

“This is part of our study that’s giving us critical information to help us understand from the employee and the job seekers side of what factors keep them at a job, what factors contribute to them leaving a job, what’s making it difficult to find work, what’s making it helpful to gain new employment or maintain meaningful employment,” says Tanya Oliver, CEO of the Grande Prairie and District Chamber of Commerce. “So it’s just going to give us some really good insight from the employee and job seekers side of things.”

“From the employer side of things, we just really want to better understand the local labour force strengths and the gaps, and also, it’s going to help us understand the gaps and opportunities in skills and training and workforce services,” adds Oliver.

The data is being collected and compiled by a third party consultant, who will then share the results of the survey with the Chamber. That information will then be used by the Chamber to develop a labour force strategy to help attract and retain workers in the region.

Oliver says they have had a lot of people fill out both the employer and employee surveys already, though is still calling for more participation to help create a more robust picture of the local labour force.

Oliver stresses that they want to hear from not just people in the City of Grande Prairie, but also from the County, the MD of Greenview, and other parts of the Peace Country. She says that data from outside the City can help the Chamber develop a better understanding of the regional work force needs.

The survey was originally set to close on Saturday, October 31, but Oliver says they are trying to extend it through the weekend to ensure more participation.

“If people could just go [online] on the weekend and provide their input it would be very valuable and very much appreciated.”
