Influenza in Alberta

Over 43,000 flu vaccines administered in AHS North Zone

Alberta Health Services has released the first weekly data for the 2020-21 influenza season.

The report shows 597,110 influenza vaccines were administered across Alberta, 43,614 of which were given out in the North Zone.

In the first week of the flu season, only one case of Influenza A was confirmed in a lab, and there were no confirmed cases of Influenza B. The one confirmed case came from the Central Zone.

AHS says in a release that at this time last year, fewer than 545,000 Albertans had received the influenza vaccine, and there were already 95 confirmed influenza cases.

While AHS says the data won’t be comparable with the 2019 figures until the current flu season has passed, health professionals are cautiously optimistic. Public health measures geared towards preventing the spread of COVID-19, including physical distancing, increased hygiene, and restrictive travel, appear to have the ability to provide cross-protection against influenza as well.

Influenza immunization is available for all Albertans over the age of six months, free of charge. Details on where and how to receive the vaccine can be found at AHS’s website.
