COVID-19 related fatality reported in County of Grande Prairie

The County of Grande Prairie is reporting its first fatality linked to COVID-19.

The death is one of 17 reported over the last two days in Alberta. The death was reported on Wednesday as a woman in her 70’s not in a continuing care facility.

There were 860 new cases reported in Alberta for November 11. The province now has 8,305 active cases of COVID-19.

The City of Grande Prairie added 16 new cases over the last 48 hours and 28 recoveries, dropping its active case total to 88. The County of Grande Prairie added three new cases and 10 recoveries, as well the one death. There are now 22 active cases there.

Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of the end of day November 11 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 368 cases (88 active, 278 recovered, two deaths)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 123 cases (22 active, 100 recovered, one death)
  • M.D. of Greenview: 41 cases (17 active, 23 recovered, one death)
  • Birch Hills County: Five cases (all recovered)
  • M.D. of Spirit River: 28 cases (all recovered)
  • Saddle Hills County: Five cases (one active, four recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 77 cases (one active, 66 recovered, ten deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 54 cases (one active, 48 recovered, five deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: 28 cases (three active, 25 recovered)
  • M.D. of Peace: 73 cases (33 active, 40 recovered)
  • M.D. of Fairview: 46 cases (19 active, 27 recovered)
  • Clear Hills County: 98 cases (one active, 96 recovered, one death)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 15 cases (five active, ten recovered)
  • County of Northern Lights: 62 cases (three active, 59 recovered)
  • Mackenzie County: 420 cases (four active, 403 recovered, 13 deaths)

Due to technical issues with Alberta Health’s reporting system, detailed laboratory testing data is unavailable at this time.

Hospitalizations remain low in the North Zone with nine people in hospital, two of whom are in an ICU. Province-wide, hospitalizations hit a new record for Wednesday with 225 Albertans now in hospital, 51 of whom are in intensive.

That surge in capacity led the province to introduce new public health measures on Thursday to try and limit the spread of COVID-19.

As for COVID-19 in schools, Whispering Ridge Community School has been placed on Alberta Health’s “Watch” list. Schools are added to the list when five or more cases have been identified within the school’s setting within a 14 day period.

The school had been shuttered to in-person classes since November 2, but did re-open on Thursday for all students not required to self-isolate.

Outbreaks have also been declared at Peace Wapiti Academy, the Grande Prairie Christian School, St Joe’s, St. John Paul II, and St. Mary’s Catholic School in Sexsmith.
