AHS launches new COVID tool to support close contact notification

Nov 14, 2020 | 12:47 PM

Alberta Health Services (AHS) has launched a new online portal to enable automated notification of close contacts of COVID-19 cases by text message.

Albertans who receive a positive COVID test are being asked to visit AHS’ website and click on the COVID-19 Close Contact Tool, where they can enter their information, including phone numbers of known close contacts.

That information is then reviewed by the AHS contact tracing team with the positive case and a text message will be delivered to all close contacts whose phone numbers were provided.

The automated notification message will inform close contacts of their exposure and instruct them to isolate immediately for 14 days. The message will also include a link to more information on isolation requirements, testing options, symptoms and supports that are available.

The name of the positive case will not be disclosed in the text message.

On November 5, it was announced that AHS will continue to directly notify all close contacts of cases in health care workers, minors (parents will be notified if their child has been exposed in a school setting), and people who live or work within congregate or communal facilities. This notification can take place via email or by telephone.

School-related contacts will continue to receive email notification from Alberta Health Services.

Close contacts are defined by AHS as anyone who was within two metres of a positive case for 15 minutes or more of cumulative contact, without consistent or appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

AHS adds that a close contact is also someone who has had direct contact with bodily fluids of a person who has COVID-19 (i.e. was coughed or sneezed on), or who provided direct care for a person who has the novel coronavirus, without consistent and appropriate use of PPE.
