AHS declares COVID-19 outbreak in surgical unit at QEII Hospital

Nov 16, 2020 | 11:45 AM

Alberta Health Services says an outbreak of COVID-19 has been declared for a surgical unit at the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Grande Prairie. This comes after one patient and two healthcare workers tested positive for COVID-19.

AHS says contact tracing for anyone potentially exposed to the infected individuals is ongoing.

“QEII remains a safe place to receive care – there is no increased risk to patients coming to the hospital. Any patient with symptoms, or who has tested positive for COVID-19, is isolated and treated in designated rooms.”

AHS adds that patients within the hospital will continue to receive treatment as normal. As an added safety measure, only essential visitors will be allowed to visit the impacted surgical unit for end-of-life or other extenuating circumstances.

This announcement comes after an outbreak of COVID-19 was declared at the Fairview Health Complex on Saturday, after three healthcare workers tested positive.

Outbreaks of COVID-19 are declared in acute care and continuing care facilities when there are two or more cases identified, indicating that transmission within the facility has occurred.
