Man wanted on outstanding warrants arrested after search of Highland Park home

A Grande Prairie man is facing a number of weapons charges after Mounties followed up on public concerns reported about a residence in the Highland Park neighbourhood.

The Grande Prairie RCMP Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) and the Alberta Sheriffs Safe City and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) Unit attended the home on September 24 as they were following up on complaints made from the public. Authorities say they attended the home looking for a man wanted on outstanding warrants.

With the help of RCMP general duty officers and the Police Dog Service, the suspect was found in the backyard of the home, where he attempted to flee by hopping over the fence. Police were able to arrest him at the scene.

Authorities searched the home under a search warrant following his arrest, and seized several items, which included:

  • a loaded pistol magazine
  • a restricted pistol: GSG-1911 handgun
  • a pocket knife
  • brass knuckles
  • bear spray
  • imitation firearms

Now, 22-year-old Shawn Arsenault is facing charges that include:

  • Carrying a concealed weapon
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Possession of a restricted firearm and ammunition
  • Fail to comply with a release order (x4)
  • Fail to comply with a probation order (x2)
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose

Arsenault is scheduled to appear in Grande Prairie Provincial Court on November 23.

RCMP add that information which is provided to law enforcement by residents plays “a crucial role” in identifying crime in the community, and they thank those who submitted tips.

They ask anyone who witnesses or suspects illegal activity to report it to their local police, or make an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers.
