Alberta expecting 680,000 COVID-19 vaccines in early 2021

Nov 18, 2020 | 6:56 PM

EDMONTON – Alberta’s chief medical health officer says the province is expecting to receive approximately 680,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine early in the new year.

But Dr. Deena Hinshaw cautions there are still hurdles and other unknowns, including testing to confirm the safety and effectiveness of the various types of vaccines.

If all goes to plan, Alberta would receive the doses from pharmaceutical makers Pfizer (465,000 doses) and Moderna (221,000 doses), which have announced their vaccines are about 95 per cent effective.

Alberta is continuing to see high daily COVID-19 case counts.

The province reported 730 new cases today.

A total of 443 people have died.

The province has imposed a ban on indoor team sports and fitness classes in major cities, but Hinshaw says she is hearing that some groups are circumventing the rules.

She says those groups risk even harsher health orders that will affect everyone.
