Fourth death linked to COVID-19 recorded in Grande Prairie

One more death linked to COVID-19 has been recorded in the City of Grande Prairie as the province recorded another 11 fatalities for Thursday.

The death is the fourth recorded in the Swan City from COVID-19 since March, and the second fatality reported this week, with the first being announced on Wednesday.

An Alberta Health spokesperson tells EverythingGP that the fatality was a man in his 70s, linked to the outbreak at the Grande Prairie Care Centre.

A total of 462 Albertans have now died from COVID-19, 130 of which have happened in November.

The City of Grande Prairie also recorded 11 new cases of COVID-19 for November 19 along with 10 more recoveries, holding the active case total at 84.

The County of Grande Prairie also added two new cases along with one recovery, where there are now 38 active cases.

Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of the end of day November 19 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 430 cases (84 active, 342 recovered, four deaths)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 154 cases (38 active, 115 recovered, one death)
  • M.D. of Greenview: 66 cases (32 active, 33 recovered, one death)
  • Birch Hills County: Five cases (all recovered)
  • M.D. of Spirit River: 28 cases (all recovered)
  • Saddle Hills County: Eight cases (four active, four recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 78 cases (two active, 66 recovered, ten deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 55 cases (two active, 48 recovered, five deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: 32 cases (six active, 26 recovered)
  • M.D. of Peace: 97 cases (33 active, 64 recovered)
  • M.D. of Fairview: 52 cases (12 active, 40 recovered)
  • Clear Hills County: 98 cases (97 recovered, one death)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 15 cases (one active, 14 recovered)
  • County of Northern Lights: 65 cases (four active, 61 recovered)
  • Mackenzie County: 426 cases (seven active, 406 recovered, 13 deaths)

The province added another record total of daily COVID-19 cases on Thursday, surpassing Wednesday’s record with 1,155 new cases in the province. There are now 10,655 active cases in the province, 651 of which are in the North Zone.

“Our current situation is grim,” said Dr. Deena Hinshaw during Friday’s COVID-19 update.

There are now 15 people in hospital with COVID-19 in the North Zone, one of whom is in an ICU. In Alberta, 310 people are now in hospital, 58 of whom are in intensive care.

The province conducted approximately 17,000 tests on Thursday, creating a provincial positivity rate of about 6.5 per cent, according to Dr. Hinshaw.
