Grande Prairie Mayor Bill Given to take on role of CAO in Jasper

Nov 23, 2020 | 3:18 PM

In a release issued by the City of Grande Prairie Mayor, they say they have been informed that Mayor Bill Given has told City Council that he plans to step down later this year to accept a position as the Chief Administrative Officer for the Municipality of Jasper.

The City says though that a formal notification has not yet been received by administration.

In the release, Council issued a statement saying they thank Given for his contributions to the City of Grande Prairie over the past 19 years, and especially the last 10 as Mayor.

“As an Alderman, Councillor and Mayor throughout the City’s largest period of growth, Bill’s legacy as a community builder, who has set up the organization for continued success, is something we are very appreciative of.

“All of Council wish Bill and (Given’s wife) Susan the best as they take on this new challenge.”

They add that the Municipal Government Act and City Bylaws will provide Council with guidance on how to move forward once Given officially steps down. Council will also be discussing how best to fill the role until next October’s municipal election, once official notification has been received.

Though he has not officially submitted his resignation, the Municipality of Jasper has announced Given has accepted the role, effective January 1, 2021.

“I know first-hand the challenge of addressing residents’ needs for both quality services and overall affordability in the current economic climate,” said Given, in a release issued by the municipality. “I’m excited about the opportunity to work with Council and the staff team to address these challenges head-on.

“I truly appreciate the special kind of community Jasper is, and I’m looking forward to providing the support Council needs to continue to advance their vision for this special place.”

Given announced back in October that he would not be seeking re-election in 2021.
