Albertans encouraged to shop local for Black Friday sales

The Parliamentary Secretary for Small Business and Tourism is encouraging Albertans to use the unofficial beginning of the holiday shopping season to support local businesses.

Martin Long asks that people support locally owned and operated business as they do their Black Friday shopping, whether it be in person, online or via curbside pickup, and by doing so to help support them as they navigate the lingering challenges caused by COVID-19.

Long issued a release Friday morning, in which he says over 536,555 Albertans are employed by 167,627 small businesses across the province. He says those businesses bring in an average of about $100-billion to the economy.

“Due to recently announced health restrictions, and to help stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus, many retailers are offering different ways to access their products and services this year,” said Long.

“I encourage all Albertans to support our retailers today and during the holiday shopping season by shopping locally – whether it’s in-store, online, or curbside pickup, every purchase at a local business makes a real difference in the lives and livelihoods of Albertans.”

In the release, he also encourages Albertans to be patient when dealing with retailers and their employees, and with other patrons, as they do their part to help the economy recover.
