Grande Prairie’s Annual Christmas Tree Lighting is going virtual this year amid COVID-19 gathering restrictions with a livestreaming event.

Mayor Bill Given will officially light the tree in frotn of Revolution Place at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 29. The event will be livestreamed on the DownTown Association’s and City of Grande Prairie’s Facebook pages, and will be shared to view on the EverythingGP Facebook page as well.

The City says in a release that following the tree lighting, Santa Claus will be joining the Mayor with a special message.

“It wouldn’t be Christmas without our annual tree lighting,” said Given. “We’re looking forward to spreading holiday cheer to all of your homes and carry on this cherished community tradition in a new format to keep everyone safe and healthy during the holiday season.”

Residents are encouraged to tune into the livestream, as no in-person event is taking place this year.

“The DownTown Association is honoured to welcome both Mayor Bill Given and Santa Claus himself to be part of this annual Christmas tradition in Grande Prairie,” said Grande Prairie DownTown Association Director Wendy Bosch.

“We are proud to carry on this event in a year of great change and continue to provide a timeless holiday celebration.”
