Unseasonably warm weather coming to Peace Region next week

Nov 27, 2020 | 5:00 AM

Weather in the Peace Region and most of Alberta will feel more like fall than winter in the next week.

Eric Dykes, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, says that they’re expecting a blast of warm air to hit the prairies over the next seven days.

“There is a large upper ridge, a big area of high pressure surfacing up in the atmosphere that is going to be coming over the Grande Prairie region at the beginning of the week. In some cases, temperatures are going to be above normal for highs, which is quite a bit higher than the normal highs which are around about minus five.”

“That warm air is going to be coming from the southwest, from the Pacific Ocean itself and it’s going to be dry for the most part as well, so very nice warm weather coming next week for the Grande Prairie region.”

Starting on Monday, temperatures could reach daytime highs of between plus one and plus four degrees Celsius with sunny skies.

Despite the warm weather over the next ten days, Dukes said there probably won’t be any records broken. Most of the record high temperatures for this time of year were recorded between 40-60 years ago, when temperatures got up between 10-12 degrees Celsius.

While we won’t break any records, Dykes says that the warm weather will be here for most of next week and will possibly leave us by December 4.

However, before we get to the warm weather, Dykes says that the Swan City will have to get through a small winter storm.

Environment Canada is calling for some light snow throughout the day on November 27, and that snow is expected to pick up on Friday evening.

“Keep in mind that when we get towards the afternoon hours (Friday), a low pressure system that is going to cross the lower B.C. Rockies into Central Alberta will start to bring some snow to the Grande Prairie region,” said Dykes. “Maybe one to two centimeters during the afternoon hours, but it’s in the night on Friday where we can see some accumulating snow.”

“We are looking for five centimeters of snow in the Grande Prairie region, closer to the B.C. border, we could see 5-10 centimeters. We’ll see the sunny skies by the afternoon on Saturday.”
