Visitors still welcome in Jasper, but they must follow rules

Nov 29, 2020 | 8:00 AM

Officials in Jasper say they are welcoming visitors but ask anyone coming to follow the COVID-19 rules that are in place.

Those include travelling and recreating only with members of your own household, wearing masks in all indoor public spaces and on downtown sidewalks and learning the rules each business might have in place.

Mayor Richard Ireland says they want to deal with what he calls “the urgent need” to deal with rising case numbers.

“Throughout the province, but locally as well. Our count has gone up. We are in enhanced status. We feel the need that we have to get the message out that the rules are there and if we all subscribe to them and apply them to ourselves, we’re all going to get through this better.”

Ireland says as long as everybody follows the rules, residents, visitors, the community, and the destination are protected, and people can still come to visit.

He adds summer tourism was better than they expected.

“And that is credit to the people of Grande Prairie (and) northern Alberta generally. Our regional market really stepped up and, once we were open again to accept visitors again beginning in June, it was that regional market that saved us.”

Ireland says spending was down from past years and there were no international visitors. He adds businesses survived but weren’t able to save enough to get them through the winter.
