Kettle Campaign Update

Salvation Army still seeking volunteers for kettle campaign

With the countdown to Christmas underway, the Grande Prairie Salvation Army is still searching for more volunteers to help out with their kettle campaign.

This year’s campaign has felt the effects of COVID-19, as many of their regular volunteers, which are seniors, have had to take a step back and not volunteer their time because of the ongoing COVID-19 threat.

Captain Peter Kim with the Salvation Army says he hopes that members of the community can step up and give a few hours of their time to help the campaign.

“We’re definitely on the look out for more. We actually do have some seniors who are going out faithfully to do the kettle campaign, so we’re thankful for that. We’re hoping that the younger generation will come and join us as well.”

Kim adds that the shifts are very straight forward and easy for anyone to do.

“It’s just a couple hours of a person’s time. It’s a lot of fun and they can still ring the bell. There are many spots available for the month of December.”

New this year, the Salvation Army is allowing people to donate in person by tapping their debit/credit card at many of their kettles around Grande Prairie. This allows for less person-to-person contact and will help volunteers feel safe while working. Kim says so far they’ve noticed that people are taking advantage of the new methods.

Those that are interested in volunteering their time can contact the Salvation Army at 780-538-2848.

The Kettle Campaign runs until December 24. It initially launched on November 13 and since that date, the Salvation Army has raised $117,000. Their goal is to raise $500,000.

“This is our major campaign for running the Salvation Army for the entire year,” said Kim.

All of the funds raised during the campaign support the Grande Prairie Salvation Army. The funds will help provide neighbours in need with food hampers, hot meals, Emergency & Disaster Services and more.
