Grande Prairie Regional Hospital officially selected as new hospital’s name

Dec 3, 2020 | 10:44 AM

The Government of Alberta has announced that the new Grande Prairie hospital will officially be called the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital.

The Ministry of Health chose the name following various in-person and online engagement sessions with staff, volunteers, partners and regional stakeholders.

Throughout the duration of the project, the hospital has carried the unofficial name of the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital.

Minister of Health Tyler Shandro says that he and his team made sure that voices from the region were heard when choosing the name.

““We heard clearly from healthcare providers and the community about how important this new facility is to everyone in Grande Prairie and the region as a whole.

“From these consultations, it became clear that the community wanted this new facility to be named the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital,” added Shandro. “This is their hospital. So, we’re pleased to give this facility the name that the people of this great city wanted.”

Signage of the official name is currently being installed at the facility.

Construction of the hospital was officially completed this past June, and is currently in the process of being commissioned by Alberta Health Services.

This includes the installation of furniture and equipment, detailed cleaning of the building, training staff to use the new equipment and systems, and thorough testing of all the medical and operational systems in order to ensure everything is safe and working properly before being used to provide patient care.

Provincial officials have told EverythingGP the hospital is hoped ready to serve the people of Northern Alberta by mid-2021.

AHS adds that a second phase of construction at the new hospital is currently underway, which will see the addition of a 28-bed mental health unit and a 32-bed medical unit. Design work has also begun on two operating suites, supported by the Alberta Surgical Initiative. These two suites will bring the total number of operating rooms at the new hospital to 11, including a dedicated maternity operating room.
