National Finals Rodeo continues, five Canadians competing

Dec 9, 2020 | 5:57 PM

The seventh performance of the National Finals Rodeo is set for Wednesday night in Arlington, Texas.

The NFR was moved from Las Vegas this year because of the pandemic.

Canadian cowboys taking part this year include Orin Larsen from Inglis, Manitoba in barebacks; Big Valley, Alberta’s Zeke Thurston in saddle broncs, Donalda, Alberta’s Curtis Cassidy in steer wrestling; and team ropers Levi Simpson from Ponoka and Kolton Schmidt from Barrhead.

Three of the saddle broncs, two of the bareback horses, and two bulls are also from Canadian stock contractors.

Larsen finished fourth in Tuesday night’s go-round for the top Canadian finish. Thurston was fifth, Simpson and his partner Shay Dixon Carroll from La Junta, Colorado were 9th. Schmidt and his partner Hunter Koch from Vernon, Texas had a no time, while Cassidy was 10th

The NFR will run through Saturday at the same venue where this year’s World Series was played.
