City of Grande Prairie records sixth COVID-19 death

A sixth person has died from COVID-19 complications in the City of Grande Prairie.

The death was one of 13 reported in Alberta on Thursday, bringing the provincial death toll from COVID-19 to 666 as of December 9.

The fatality in Grande Prairie was a man in his 60’s and is linked to the outbreak at the Elders Caring Shelter and occurred on December 9.

This comes as there were five new cases reported in the City of Grande Prairie for Wednesday. There were also four more recoveries alongside the fatality, leaving the active case total in the Swan City at 112.

Two new cases were recorded in the County alongside two recoveries, keeping the active case total there at 19.

Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of the end of day December 9 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 581 cases (112 active, 463 recovered, six deaths)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 189 cases (19 active, 169 recovered, one death)
  • M.D. of Greenview: 105 cases (18 active, 86 recovered, one death)
  • Birch Hills County: Seven cases (one active, six recovered)
  • M.D. of Spirit River: 31 cases (one active, 30 recovered)
  • Saddle Hills County: Eight cases (all recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 80 cases (one active, 69 recovered, ten deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 75 cases (14 active, 56 recovered, five deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: 85 cases (26 active, 59 recovered)
  • M.D. of Peace: 162 cases (36 active, 126 recovered)
  • M.D. of Fairview: 53 cases (one active, 51 recovered, one death)
  • Clear Hills County: 98 cases (97 recovered, one death)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 46 cases (22 active, 22 recovered)
  • County of Northern Lights: 69 cases (all recovered)
  • Mackenzie County: 457 cases (28 active, 416 recovered, 13 deaths)

Alberta added 1,566 new cases of COVID-19 for December 9, following the completion of 16,793 tests. Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health, says the province’s positivity rate is nine per cent.

682 Albertans are now in hospital, 124 of whom are in intensive care. In the North Zone, 35 people are in hospital with four of those people admitted to the ICU.
