Dec 11, 2020 | 2:02 PM

The Grande Prairie RCMP will be stepping up their presence throughout December as they look to keep roadways safe this holiday season.

The RCMP’s Municipal Traffic Unit has organized several multi-day check stops within the City of Grande Prairie to crackdown on those potentially drinking and driving.

In addition to the check stops in the city, the Grande Prairie RCMP Integrated Traffic Unit, in collaboration with the RCMP and Alberta Sheriffs will have similar initiatives on rural roads and highways.

Last weekend, the first of the RCMP’s check stops took place between December 4 and 6.

RCMP issued Immediate Roadside Sanctions to several people in the city:

  • Six drivers issued IRS – Fail suspension, including 1 refusal (4 of these were on December 5)
  • One driver issued IRS – warn
  • One driver issued IRS – 24 Hour suspension

Outside of the city, RCMP yielded the following results:

  • Four drivers issued IRS – Fail
  • Four drivers IRS – Caution
  • Two drivers IRS – Zero Tolerance GDL
  • One driver IRS – 24 hour suspension

RCMP encourage residents that if you plan on drinking, to have a safe ride home or take a cab.
