Chamber celebrating 20 years for Centre 2000

Dec 20, 2020 | 7:00 AM

The Grande Prairie & District Chamber of Commerce is celebrating 20 years for Centre 2000.

A special light display that can have different colours installed to mark special occasions is now in place at the sundial.

Chamber chair Larry Gibson says Centre 2000 has been “instrumental to the Chamber.”

“(It is a) great place to have our office and be located and do the management of the building. it has been a great facility. We really enjoy being in that space and having meeting rooms available for our staff and for businesses that come and visit us.”

Besides the Chamber offices, Centre 2000 is also home to the Visitor Information Centre and Grande Prairie Regional Tourism Association office.

Gibson says it has been important for local tourism.

“With the museum (Heritage Discovery Centre) down there and then the Rotary tours that come out of the building, it just gives travelers that are coming through (a place to stop).

“It’s right on the bypass, very easy to find, it’s been great for tourism to have that building and to have the facilities in there that they can come in and get their information.”

The offices for the United Way and Community Foundation of Northwestern Alberta are also located in Centre 2000. It has also hosted events and meetings for community groups.

The original site picked for Centre 2000 was actually across the bypass from where it sits now. But organizers soon found out that was where the landfill used to be, so they opted for the current location.
