Two new specialists now practising in Grande Prairie

Dec 22, 2020 | 11:55 AM

Grande Prairie and area residents now have increased access to care as two new specialists have moved their practices to the Swan City.

Dr. Robert Herman, a general nephrologist and internist, has begun practising at the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital and Peace Country Medical Consultants, while Dr. Daniel Prada, a geriatric physician, has also brought his practice into the city.

Dr. Herman specializes in kidney disease and care as a general nephrologist. His other specialty, internal medicine, deals with diagnosis and management of chronic, adult medical conditions.

Dr. Prada, meanwhile, provides care to elderly patients with a wide range of healthcare needs, including physical and cognitive impairments.

“This is wonderful news for Grande Prairie,” says Health Minister Tyler Shandro ,in a release from Alberta Health Services.

“It’s great to see physicians choosing to practise in northern Alberta where there’s so much need for them. The new hospital is beautiful and it’s state-of-the-art, but this is a reminder that healthcare is about people, and this will help ensure that the system in Grande Prairie continues to give great care.”

Dr. Herman, a graduate of the University of Alberta’s (U of A) medical school, previously worked in Edmonton’s Grey Nuns Community Hospital and the Misericordia Community Hospital. He has been working at the QEII since July serving as a locum/visiting physician, but now has a full role as a specialist.

Dr. Prada, meanwhile, trained as a family medicine physician, including rural health medicine, and completed his residence at the QEII. He then went on to complete his geriatric training at the U of A, where he stayed on as chief resident for the Rural Family Medicine Resident program.

In AHS’s release, Dr. James Pope, the Facility Medical Director at the QEII, says it’s great news to local residents that these physicians are moving their practices here. He says Dr. Prada will help provide more support to the elderly population and their loved ones, while Dr. Herman becoming a permanent fixture at the hospital will benefit area residents and the hospital itself.
