This story has been updated from its original version.

Four people are dead after a helicopter crash in Birch Hills County, and the RCMP say it is believed to be a family of four that were killed.

A spokesperson for the Alberta RCMP tells EverythingGP that the victims are believed to be two adults and two children, who were killed when a Robertson R44 helicopter crashed on New Year’s Day in the county, located north of Grande Prairie.

Officers from the Spirit River detachment responded to the Emergency Location Transmitter signal, where they found the helicopter crashed in a farmer’s field. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada later said the crash occurred near Eaglesham, a hamlet east of Spirit River.

Police said all four people inside the helicopter at the time of the crash were confirmed to have died as a result of the crash.

The age and names of the people inside the helicopter have not been released.

Mounties have secured the scene and are awaiting the arrival of Nav Canada and OHS investigators to arrive.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada said early Saturday afternoon that they are deploying a team of investigators to the site of the fatal helicopter crash.

The TSB says in a statement they will gather information and assess the occurrence.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Birch Hills Fire Chief Tom Morgan, who responded to the crash, says members of the tight-knit community are grieving for the victims’ family and friends.
