COVID-19 deaths reported in City and County of Grande Prairie

Fatalities linked to COVID-19 have been identified in the City and County of Grande Prairie.

The deaths were among 26 announced by Alberta Health during Tuesday’s update.

The death reported in the City of Grande Prairie was a man in his 70’s that occurred on Sunday and is linked to the outbreak at the Grande Prairie Care Centre.

The death in the County was a man in his 70’s that happened on Monday, not linked to an outbreak site.

A total of 1,168 deaths have occurred as a result of COVID-19 in Alberta since March of 2020, 72 of which have occurred in the North Zone.

The deaths come as there were 17 new cases identified in the City of Grande Prairie on Monday along with 12 recoveries. The Swan City had a total of 121 active cases as of Monday.

Ten new cases were identified in the County of Grande Prairie along with one recovery. There are now 36 active cases there.

Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of the end of day January 4 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 839 cases (121 active, 709 recovered, nine deaths)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 254 cases (36 active, 216 recovered, two deaths)
  • M.D. of Greenview: 166 cases (35 active, 130 recovered, one death)
  • Birch Hills County: Seven cases (all recovered)
  • M.D. of Spirit River: 39 cases (seven active, 32 recovered)
  • Saddle Hills County: 12 cases (three active, nine recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 93 cases (five active, 78 recovered, 10 deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 257 cases (115 active, 137 recovered, five deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: 121 cases (23 active, 98 recovered)
  • M.D. of Peace: 234 cases (53 active, 181 recovered)
  • M.D. of Fairview: 59 cases (one active, 57 recovered, one death)
  • Clear Hills County: 99 cases (98 recovered, one death)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 149 cases (58 active, 91 recovered)
  • County of Northern Lights: 70 cases (one active, 69 recovered)
  • Mackenzie County: 481 cases (nine active, 457 recovered, 15 deaths)

Alberta revealed 843 new cases for January 4, after 10,301 tests were completed on Monday. Chief medical officer of health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, says the province’s positivity rate sits at around 8.2 per cent.

Hospitalizations in the North Zone sit at 63 as of the end of day January 4, with five of those individuals in an ICU. Alberta’s hospitalization totals climbed to 919, with 140 of those individuals in an ICU.

Health Minister Tyler Shandro said approximately 3,000 vaccination doses were administered in the province on Monday, bring the number of doses given to 26,269.
