Grande Prairie adds 14 new COVID-19 cases, five recoveries

There were 14 new cases of COVID-19 recorded in the City of Grande Prairie for Tuesday, January 5, alongside five recoveries. That bring’s the active case total in the Swan City to 130.

There was one new case recorded in the County of Grande Prairie over that time along with four recoveries, bringing the active case total there to 33.

The province recorded 1,123 new cases for Tuesday following 16,127 tests being completed. That creates a positivity rate of 6.9 per cent.

There were also 25 new deaths reported by Alberta Health as a result of COVID-19, including one in the North Zone. The fatality was recorded in the Big Lakes County area, becoming the sixth recorded in the area since March.

Alberta Health says the fatality was a man in his 50’s, which occurred on January 2. Comorbidities are unknown at this time.

The fatality comes as the region, which includes the communities of High Prairie, Grouard and Faust, recorded 20 new cases for Tuesday. There are now 124 active cases in the area as of the end of day January 5.

Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of the end of day January 5 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 853 cases (130 active, 714 recovered, nine deaths)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 255 cases (33 active, 220 recovered, two deaths)
  • M.D. of Greenview: 172 cases (38 active, 133 recovered, one death)
  • Birch Hills County: Seven cases (all recovered)
  • M.D. of Spirit River: 40 cases (seven active, 33 recovered)
  • Saddle Hills County: 13 cases (four active, nine recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 93 cases (five active, 78 recovered, 10 deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 277 cases (124 active, 147 recovered, six deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: 124 cases (26 active, 98 recovered)
  • M.D. of Peace: 244 cases (64 active, 180 recovered)
  • M.D. of Fairview: 59 cases (one active, 57 recovered, one death)
  • Clear Hills County: 99 cases (98 recovered, one death)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 158 cases (63 active, 95 recovered)
  • County of Northern Lights: 70 cases (all recovered)
  • Mackenzie County: 495 cases (22 active, 458 recovered, 15 deaths)

Hospitalizations in Alberta dropped by eight to 911, with 141 of those people in an ICU. In the North Zone there are 63 people in hospital, seven of whom have been admitted into the ICU.

There have now been 30,033 vaccine doses administered in the province, an increase of 3,764 from the day prior.
