Eleventh death from COVID-19 recorded in City of Grande Prairie

For the second day in a row, a fatality linked to COVID-19 has been recorded in the City of Grande Prairie.

The fatality was a man in his 60’s linked to the outbreak announced at the Grande Prairie Care Centre. It is the 11th fatality from COVID-19 recorded in Grande Prairie over the past 10 months.

A total of 77 deaths have occurred in the North Zone since March of 2020, while 1,284 deaths have been recorded in Alberta (12 new for January 9).

The death in Grande Prairie was reported as nine new cases were recorded in the City alongside 15 more recoveries. There are now 151 active cases in the Swan City as of the end of day January 9.

Three new cases were recorded in the County of Grande Prairie over that same time. There are now 44 active cases there.

Five new cases and one recovery were recorded in the MD of Greenview, bringing the active case total there to 74. Fifth-three of those active cases are in the Valleyview area.

Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of the end of day January 9 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 908 cases (151 active, 746 recovered, 11 deaths)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 271 cases (44 active, 225 recovered, two deaths)
  • M.D. of Greenview: 212 cases (74 active, 137 recovered, one death)
  • Birch Hills County: Seven cases (all recovered)
  • M.D. of Spirit River: 42 cases (five active, 37 recovered)
  • Saddle Hills County: 14 cases (five active, nine recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 94 cases (four active, 80 recovered, 10 deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 323 cases (148 active, 169 recovered, six deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: 132 cases (38 active, 101 recovered)
  • M.D. of Peace: 284 cases (100 active, 184 recovered)
  • M.D. of Fairview: 55 cases (one active, 53 recovered, one death)
  • Clear Hills County: 105 cases (one active, 103 recovered, one death)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 173 cases (73 active, 100 recovered)
  • County of Northern Lights: 70 cases (one active, 70 recovered)
  • Mackenzie County: 504 cases (28 active, 461 recovered, 15 deaths)

A total of 811 new cases were recorded in Alberta for January 9, following the completion of 12,302 tests on Saturday. That creates a positivity rate of 6.3 per cent.

Hospitalizations continued to decrease on Saturday, dropping by 33 to 794 in Alberta. Of those 794 in hospital, 128 are in intensive care.

In the North Zone, there are 63 people in hospital, seven of whom are in an ICU.

A total of 44,994 vaccine doses have been administered as of Saturday, an increase of 2,661.
