Grande Prairie city committee to review mask bylaw

Jan 11, 2021 | 6:40 PM

City Council has decided to send its Face Covering Bylaw, also known as the Mask Bylaw (C-1426), to the committee level for review.

Interim Mayor Jackie Clayton says Council wants more information from administration so it can decide on an end date.

“It currently ends at the end of January (January 31) and right now, there is consideration for what the province has mandated and how that works in regards with the dates of our bylaw. It will come back to the next committee meeting for further discussion and an opportunity for Council and committee to ask administration some questions.”

There had been some discussion at Monday’s Council meeting about changing the expiry date in the bylaw.

Councillor Clyde Blackburn’s motion to delete the paragraph containing the January 31 date in its entirety was defeated. So was a motion from Councillor Dylan Bressey to change the expiry date to November 30 this year.

Clayton says not having a date was concerning for council.

“People want to know what this looks like on the horizon and what council is leading in regard to the direction going forward with masks once the provincial mandates are lifted.”

The next committee meetings are scheduled for January 19.
